Cheap Used Cars

Finding used cars cheap in your local market is often a better idea than trying to find cheap used cars online. It's not that there aren't any deals online; but if you are looking for cars that are highly affordable, then the costs of transport and typical consumer risks can end up causing extra expenses that are more than you paid for the car!

Check your local paper, penny saver type of publications that are typically available free at grocery stores, Auto Trader and similar magazines, and see what you can find. If you are in an area served by CraigsList, try checking there as well -- but remember, if someone is trying to sell a car for a super-low price, then chances are they don't have a huge incentive to spend a lot of money advertising.

Kelley Blue Book values are still considered the benchmark reference for car values, but as more and more new cars and used cars become available for sale online, new standards are emerging in used car prices and values.

Carmax

If you live in one of the 100+ cities served by Carmax, you may be in luck -- the nation's largest used car chain is a major exception to the FSBO rule of thumb (i.e. that you can always get a car cheaper from an owner.) Over and above price competitiveness, Carmax has industry-leading screening standards for their vehicles and extremely open disclosure policies.
